Did you know that Memphis has an organization that offers free tutoring for adults who need help with reading or want to learn English? Once assessed, those adults are waiting to be matched up with a tutor who can work with them one-on-one or in a small group setting...YOU!
Become a volunteer tutor with Literacy Mid-South and help empower an adult to accomplish their reading, writing, or English speaking goals by meeting twice a week for six months, though you are welcome to continue meeting as long as desired. All tutoring is done at the library of the learner’s choice, or virtually via video chat, and the meeting schedule will be set by the two of you.
At this point, you have to be wondering how you can sign up to be one of these amazing tutors...I’m glad you asked! All you have to do is fill out a volunteer application and attend two short trainings. To sign up, click here.

Our vision is 100% literacy in the Mid-South. Literacy Mid-South is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create a community actively engaged in continuous learning. Somewhere between 20% to 30% of adults in the Memphis metro area are functionally illiterate. That means more than just unemployment -- their minds are unused and their dreams are unrealized.
YOU can help. There is no greater gift to give than helping a person succeed. Facilitate learning in the life of an adult who struggles with reading, writing, math and English as a foreign language through Literacy Mid-South's Adult Learning Program and English For You program. Volunteers are able to serve as facilitators to groups of adults or provide individual goal-centered tutoring to an adult learner.
