Youth Engagement Advocacy Housing

Start your morning well by cooking and/or serving breakfast at YEAH! - Berkeley's only shelter for young adults. We need community members like you to make this safe and community-oriented shelter possible! Breakfast is such an important part of starting off a day well, especially for folks who are on the streets all day, and we need YOUR HELP to make sure the young people we serve get breakfast every day!

YEAH! was founded in 2002 as a community response to youth homlessness. At YEAH!, young people ages 18-24 can access case management, mental health supports, groups, social activities, seasonal shelter, food, ans basic necessities like food and clothing.

When the shelter opens at 8:00pm each night, youth have access to freshly cooked hot dinners, showers, and laundry, as well as hygiene products and clothing. We often have activities in evening, including games, movies, and community meetings. Youth are able to store personal belongings in a secure lockers, and utilize a mat with clean sheets to sleep on. Breakfast is available each morning before we close at 8:00am.

Weekdays:

Breakfast volunteers are very important to help get the day started right! Monday through Friday we offer 'cold' breakfast (cereal, oatmeal packets, fruit, coffee, etc). The morning volunteer makes sure all the food is set out, youth serve themselves, the volunteer replenishes everything as needed, and they clean up the dishes and kitchen with the help of another volunteer or staff. This volunteer position is hugely beneficial! It helps the morning get off to a good start for the youth, the staff, and the volunteer!
Monday through Friday: 6:30 to 8:30am
Volunteers in this positions are expected to commit to volunteer once a week for a minimum of four months, but schedules are flexible if needed.

Weekends:

Are you interested in cooking an awesome breakfast for the young people at the shelter!? On Saturdays and Sundays volunteers make a hot breakfast! They can cook with the eggs and pancake mix we have on site, and they are also encouraged to bring additional ingredients to make breakfast even better! This position can be done on your own, or with a partner or small group that you put together. You cook, serve, and make sure the kitchen is cleaned up before you go.

Saturdays & Sundays: 6:30 to 8:30am
These volunteers commit to coming in once a month to cook breakfast.

If you're interested, you're just in time! The shelter opens on November 23rd, but you can start getting involved now! Volunteer orientations have already started - contact the Community Relations Coordinator through this ad to learn more about when they are and to RSVP. We also have some opportunities to have volunteers help with preparing for the shelter in the meantime! So, get in touch, and we would love to have you join our volunteer team! YEAH! also has several other volunteer positions that you're welcome to get in touch with us about.
