ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
The essential function of this position is to assist with the sorting, stocking, packing, and distribution of product for the Hastings Family Service food shelf.
The food shelf volunteer interacts with staff, donors, volunteers, and clients with strict confidentiality, professionalism, and respect.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uphold the mission and values of Hastings Family Service.
- Assist shoppers with in the Market.
- Treat all shoppers, volunteers, donors, and staff with respect and kindness.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Greet and assist donors or notify appropriate staff to assist.
- Weigh and record all incoming food.
- Sort, check, and stock food items in the Market and warehouse.
- Pack food orders for shoppers.
- Prepare emergency food bags.
- Assist in keeping the food shelf, warehouse, refrigerators, and freezers clean.
- Double bag grocery bags for food orders.
- Assist with unloading deliveries and donations when needed.
- Sign-in, read volunteer communication book, and check bulletin boards for updates.
REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to bend, lift, twist for a four hour shift.
- Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain food safety standards.

Hastings Family Service is a community based nonprofit agency providing a range of emergency and supportive services for over forty years to assist and guide neighbors from the Hastings area who lack food, clothing, shelter, support or transportation.
HFS provides help and hope in a spirit of caring and respect, knowing that unforeseen circumstances like job elimination, reduction in work hours or medical emergencies can happen to any of us at any time. The current economy has created numerous vulnerabilities, and HFS strives to assist those in need while providing fulfilling opportunities for volunteers and community member to support those efforts.
