A Comforting Touch

ORGANIZATION: Hospice of the Chesapeake

This volunteering opportunity is available at several locations, works around your schedule, and provides you with necessary training.

At this time, Hospice of the Chesapeake is seeking dedicated and compassionate volunteers to join our Healing Arts Patient Care Team as Comfort Touch Volunteers in Anne Arundel County. Comfort Touch is a simple, hands-on technique using a combination of gentle strokes, light pressure and tender holds. It has been designed especially for hospice patients, elders and others who would benefit from gentle and compassionate touch. The wonderful, trained volunteers of Hospice of the Chesapeake are honored to provide this wonderful service to our patients and their families during this extremely difficult time.

Many patients and elders are touch deprived; they are sometimes scared, uncomfortable and often lonely. This technique is designed to offer comfort, promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and lessen the receiver’s sense isolation and loneliness. Through attentive touch, we can communicate connection, warmth, trust and kindness. A typical Comfort Touch session lasts 15-30 minutes, depending on the patient’s wishes.

A mandatory patient care training and two-day Comfort Touch Training must be completed before volunteers provide this service to our patients. Many volunteers choose to begin volunteering as a patient care volunteer first, and to add this specialty service into their repertoire when the trainings come along.
