Legal Internships with Major Civil Rights Organization

ORGANIZATION: Council on American-Islamic Relations, Michigan chapter (CAIR-MI)

Legal Internships:

The internship is open to first year law students. The legal intern will work closely with CAIR-MI Staff Attorney on resolving cases of discrimination reported to CAIR-MI.

* Research laws and policies on employment, student conduct, immigration procedures, criminal offenses, and other areas as seen fit.
* Legal writing: drafting arguments, memos and complaints.
* Other office duties as assigned.
* The ideal candidate is organized and able to follow-through to complete all assigned tasks
* He/she possesses excellent legal written communication skills and a commitment to serving the community.

Legal Clerkships:

Second and third year law students are encouraged to apply for the law clerk positions.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
* Work closely with Staff Attorney to work on legal cases for CAIR-MI.
* Clerks will write legal letters, complete intakes, draft complaints and more.
* Participate in representing complainants in dispute resolution, EEOC mediation, filing complaints and possible law suits.
* Assist in documenting incidents of religious discrimination by counseling and interviewing complainants regarding their incidents.
Qualifications:
* The internship is open to second or third year law students.
* Applicants need one year law research experience and access to a legal database.
* Candidates should have an interest in civil rights cases.
* The ideal candidate is organized and able to follow-through to complete all assigned tasks.
* He/she possesses excellent legal written communication skills and a commitment to serving the community.

CAIR-MI is a chapter of the national organization, Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR is the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. CAIR-MI is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in Michigan. CAIR-Mi's mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding through education, mediation, media and the law. CAIR-MI has been serving the state of Michigan since 2000 with an emphasis on Metro Detroit, Flint/Saginaw, Ann Arbor/Jackson, Lansing, Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, and Grand Rapids/Muskegon.

Description

The Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan Chapter (CAIR-MI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) grassroots civil rights and advocacy group. The organization is affiliated with America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group, CAIR, whose headquarters is located in Washington D.C.

Through media and government relations, education and advocacy, CAIR-MI puts forth an Islamic perspective to ensure the Muslim voice is represented. In offering this perspective, CAIR seeks to empower the American Muslim community and encourage their participation in political and social activism.
