Wildfires are devastating communities across California, causing more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes and threatening many more. The Camp Fire in Northern California -- one of three blazing across the state -- is the most destructive in state history. We want to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you find access to shelter. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know the most effective ways to contribute.
The H.L. Hunley is one of the most amazing artifacts in American History. Lost in 1864 and rasied in 2000, the Hunley has captured the imagination of millions of people around the world. And we need your help telling the story!
Almost immediately after the H.L. Hunley's recovery in the year 2000, the non-profit organization Friends of the Hunley (FOTH) was overwhelmed with callers requesting to see the submarine first hand. A volunteer program was established to help make public tours of the Hunley submarine possible.
Tour guides should be comfortable learning the history of the Hunley and presenting it to a group of visitors. Other responsibilities can include staging groups for tours, manning the membership table and providing assistance in the gift shop. Volunteer tour guides are primarily needed on Weekends, but there are also opportunities with private groups during the week.
This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, practice your public speaking and surround yourself with science, technolgy, history and an amazing story.
