About

Almost immediately after the H.L. Hunley's recovery in the year 2000, the non-profit organization Friends of the Hunley (FOTH) was overwhelmed with callers requesting to see the submarine first hand. It was evident from the public's strong interest that FOTH open for tours. However, with a small staff and limited funds, FOTH could not do it on their own. A volunteer program was established to help make public tours of the Hunley submarine possible.

The Hunley Volunteer Program consists of individuals who give guided tours and provide visitor support to guests. Tour guides should be comfortable learning the history of the Hunley and presenting it to a group of visitors. Other responsibilities can include staging groups for tours, manning the membership table and providing assistance in the gift shop. Volunteers are primarily needed on Saturdays and Sundays, but there are also opportunities with private groups during the week.
