Mission Statement
Since 1995, Wild Bear’s mission is to provide year round educational programs to people of all ages fostering a life-long appreciation of the environment and promoting an environmentally aware and ecologically sound community.
Description
Wild Bear Nature Center is Boulder County’s only all ages, non-profit nature center open almost every day throughout the year. Wild Bear was a key partner (with Town of Nederland and Boulder County Parks and Open Space) in the preservation of 260 acres of Mud Lake Open Space and now 3,200 acres are preserved on the north end of Nederland, Colorado. Wild Bear contributed $100,000 (through generous donors) to purchase its own 5 acres at Mud Lake and removed over 30 tons of trash from the Mud Lake Open Space making it one of the healthiest wetland habitats in Boulder County. Wild Bear's long term vision is to develop a permanent nature center facility on its property at Mud Lake, but currently operates out of an interim nature center in downtown Nederland. Last year over 25,000 visitors engaged in exhibits and learning about local mountain ecosystems. Wild Bear is planning the building of the permanent nature center on its 5 acres, and presently is completing an exchange for a new 5 acres. The original 5 acre site experienced a sink hole and now the new site on the corner of CR126 and the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (HWY 72), a perfect location for the new nature center. This year Wild Bear engaged the community in a series of focus groups (Charrettes) to build the vision of the nature center and completed a feasibility study to build the future Nature Center.
