Volunteers in front of our yellow windmill

Join us in the gardens of the California Nursery Historical Park. We meet on Thursdays from 10 to noon. We have several gardens that we are taking care of: rose garden, cactus garden, Japanese garden, and pollinator garden.

Each week we will be doing different activities to keep our gardens looking great: weeding, raking, watering, planting, and pruning. Bring gloves if you have them, and your favorite garden tools. Tools can be borrowed.

This park is located at Nursery Avenue and Niles Boulevard. The rose garden is on the right as you drive in. Park opposite rose garden next to chain-link fence and look for Judy or Janet. We will be in the rose garden, the adjacent cactus garden, near the nursery office, in the lawn area, or in the gardens further north.

Our park has a little museum and you can find out about the history of the California Nursery Company which was established in 1884! Roses! Palms! Lots of Plants!

Weekend work parties for groups of 10 or more.

16 or older or if younger, must sign a waiver.

Mission Statement

The California Nursery Historical Park in Fremont provides many exciting opportunities for volunteers. Do you like to garden? We have a rose garden, cactus garden, Japanese garden, and pollinator garden. Do you like history? Our park is located on a portion of a 150-year old historic nursery that was instrumental in providing plants to a growing California. Do you need volunteer hours for school? There are many projects going on that you can be a part of.

The Friends of the California Nursery are people who enjoy and volunteer in our historic park. The gardens are maintained by volunteers who enjoy working in the rose garden, cactus garden, Japanese garden, historic trees, and pollinator garden. Volunteers and staff work with the Roeding family to catalogue and archive their nursery artifacts, so that one day the history of this amazing family, nursery, and their contribution to horticulture can be viewed by all and inspire all. Classes and tours take advantage of the plants and animals that reside here.

The Math Science Nucleus in conjunction with the City of Fremont is exploring Fremont's long history in the nursery business.
