For 98 years, The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. has provided jobs, independence, and empowerment for individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities in our community. As a nonprofit social enterprise, our mission is:

To create and enhance opportunities for independence and self-sufficiency for people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities.

The Lighthouse is the largest employer of individuals who are blind west of the Mississippi and the largest employer of DeafBlind individuals in the United States. With our mission to develop sustainable jobs for our community comes the necessity to provide programs and services to ensure the success of our employees. These programs and services include our Braille Literacy Program, Computer Training Program, DeafBlind Program, Orientation and Mobility Training, Interpreting Services, and our Supported Employment Program.

To ensure our programs and services are sustainable, as well as keeping pace with demand, the Lighthouse established Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation in 2003. The Foundation oversees and manages the fundraising efforts for these unique and vitally important mission-related expenses.

The Foundation has a dynamic and growing Board of Directors that is at the forefront of these fundraising and community outreach efforts. We are currently recruiting for new Board Members who share a passion and interest in our mission, as well as a desire to be ambassadors for the organization year-round. Key responsibilities of board members include:

  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings
  • Attend Lighthouse functions and events
  • Be a committed and passionate community ambassador
  • Invite circles of influence to attend events and become donors
  • Introduce opportunities to support the Lighthouse
  • Invite community members to tour our facility
  • Participate in Foundation sub-committees
  • Be willing to support and assist staff with major asks or giving opportunities

We are looking for enthusiastic community leaders and professionals who would like to be part of a growing and vitally important Foundation Board of Directors. Individuals who share a passion for making a difference in the lives of those that are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities.

If you are interested in joining Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation Board of Directors or have any questions, please contact Troy P. Coalman at tcoalman@seattlelh.org or (206) 436-2174.
