About

Found in Translation offers free medical interpreter training to low-income, bilingual women, who are often homeless or previously homeless. Each year the women and their children represent a wide array of different cultures and languages; last year there were 24 different languages spoken. Our program participants must be fully bilingual in English and a target language. One of the most important supportive services we provide is free on-site childcare during our program and any workshops organized throughout the year. Historically, over 79% of the women attending our program are mothers, and 59% of those are single mothers. We depend entirely on volunteers to be able to provide free childcare. There are two possible childcare volunteer commitments:

  • During our free medical interpreter training program, we need childcare volunteers from February 8, 2016 until the end of May; Childcare volunteers are required to commit to at least one 4-hour shift on a weekday from 5:00-9pm, with the option (!) of comitting to all 3 class days.
  • Post-graduation, FIT alumnae attend monthly alumnae meetings and continuing education workshops. These are usually 2 hours and happen once a month- ideal for short term volunteers.
The ideal candidate will be extremely responsible, independent, warm, friendly, culturally sensitive, and have experience working with children- playing games, helping with homework assignments, and enforcing all safety rules. S/he should relish the unique opportunity to play a crucial role in the success of each Found in Translation student as they work toward stability, professional development, and beyond.
