Founded in 1976.

Are you interested in the environment? Would you like to help monitor water quality and toxic plankton at Bolsa Chica? Are you or anyone you know interested in volunteering with environmental education programs? If so...

Contact us at flow@amigosdebolsachica.org to sign up!

FLOW, which stands for Follow and Learn about the Ocean and Wetland, is Amigos de Bolsa Chica’s Citizen Science Monitoring Program. This is an exciting opportunity for members of the community to learn more about phytoplankton and coastal ecology, to participate in the collection of scientific data and to get involved in water quality monitoring efforts. Anyone interested in participating of this program is encouraged to sign up for training to become a volunteer!

As a volunteer for FLOW, you will . . .
-learn how to monitor phytoplankton;
-identify potentially harmful plankton species;
-measure water quality variables such as temperature, salinity, pH and nutrients;
-help teach junior high and high school students about environmental quality
-be part of a network of citizen scientists that collect data all over the state and nation!
Since we are a partner with the California State Parks, once you complete your paperwork and live scan to be an official volunteer with them, your volunteer hours count towards earning you a State Parks parking pass!

Mission Statement

We advocate for the full protection of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and educate our community about its ecological value.

Description

The Amigos de Bolsa Chica is one of the oldest and most successful environmental preservation organizations in California. We rely upon members, volunteers and the community to continue fulfilling our mission.

The Amigos de Bolsa Chica is a 501(c)3 foundation that was formed in 1976 by a small group of Huntington Beach citizens who were concerned about the loss of a rare and valuable piece of open space, the Bolsa Chica wetland.

Over the years the Amigos have provided off-site programs and guided tours of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve for thousands of school children and adults.
