Painting with the horses

Equestrian volunteers can work with Painted Turtle horses all year long. Our horses are onsite through out the year and we are looking for individuals that not only want to work with the horses but also work toward working with our campers. We have an exercise program, sidewalking and leading in lessons, and barn management as needed. Volunteers who work with the campers must be 19 years or older. All camp medical requirements must be met prior to working with campers.

For the exercising program you must have 2 years horse experience to include riding lessons and horse handling. A riding test is required prior to joining the schooling program. Our schooling program is for those that are 16 years and older. Parents must sign liability waivers and schooling hours can work around school hours. The Schooling program is designed to keep the horses in shape and will include not only ground work but mounted work as well. Schooling volunteers must pass a riding test, horse handling class and demonstrate maturity and responsibility at all times.

Mission Statement

The Painted Turtle is a place where children with serious medical conditions can celebrate just being kids! Our nonprofit organization offers children with serious medical conditions and their families a unique camp experience designed to foster personal growth and exploration. Our goal is to empower campers--to make new friends, try new things, build self-confidence, and become more independent in their medical care. In short, we aspire to help our campers discover all that is possible in their lives.

There is no billing department at The Painted Turtle--campers and their families attend free of charge. And there’s no limit to the amount of laughter campers take home with them either!

Description

In 1999 Paul Newman and Page Adler, along with a group of other dedicated individuals, co-founded The Painted Turtle. Through the ongoing commitment of these individuals, many of whom sit on our board today, the dream of The Painted Turtle became a reality. Since opening in 2004, we have served thousands of campers and family members at our year-round camp programs. In September 2007, The Painted Turtle established its Outreach Program called The Painted Turtle Outpost, which brings the hopeful, playful spirit of camp to children at hospitals and community events. Along with Outpost, we have fall and spring family weekends, AND 8 week-long summer sessions which are divided up according to chronic illness.

Beyond the laughter and play volunteers bring to camp, the impact they make on our campers and families lasts long after they leave the gates of The Painted Turtle. Our volunteers often comment that camp deeply touches their own lives as well.
