ICA

Volunteer opportunity description

The Indo-Caribbean Alliance (ICA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Queens, New York. Founded in 2008 by three residents who wanted to organize their community to advocate for the creation of programs and services in the underserved Indo-Caribbean and South Asian enclaves of South Queens including Richmond Hill, South Ozone Park, Ozone Park, South Jamaica and Jamaica.

Recently, ICA launched two new youth-oriented programs: our Middle School Initiative and College Bound Program. We designed both of these programs to address the issues students must confront in their school every day.

Our Middle School Initiative helps students in grades 6-8 develop an appreciation for education, make them more active in their community and drive a desire to pursue higher education. We will provide tutoring specifically for entrance exams into gifted and talented programs, an environment for students to learn and participate in community service and introduce college and career options.

Our College Bound Program offers resources and support for students in grades 9-12 and assists them to complete high school and to become academically prepared for college. This program will emphasize individual growth for each participant through tutoring, SAT preparation, an intensive college information session, and much more. . These programs are centered on three central themes of academic achievement, career exploration and the promoting a shared and proud identity.

We need SAT and academic tutors, specifically in the following subjects: English, Chemistry, Global Studies, Phyics, Trigonometry, Living Envrionment, etc. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community while developing strong bonds with both the youth and ICA!

Requirements
  • Strong academic background in chosen subject to tutor: Chemistry, Global Studies, Physics, Trigonometry, Living Envrionment, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Flexibility with regard to work environment
  • Ability to work with students one-on-one and in small groups
  • Available to give 4-6 hours per week (ideally mid-late afternoon hours)

Please email resume to Vedesh Persaud at vedesh @indocaribbean.org.
