Are you looking for a volunteer experience with a meaningful impact? Become a Big Brother, Big Sister, or a Big Couple to a youth in Milwaukee or Waukesha County. In our Community-based Mentoring Program, you meet with a child three to four times a month. You can shoot hoops, help with homework, or visit a local museum together - you and the child decide what to do and when to meet. We also have over 80 planned and staffed events free for you and your Little to participate in.
Children in our one-to-one mentoring relationships improve in school, avoid risky and delinquent behaviors, achieve higher self-esteem, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others.
In 2016, youth in our program achieved the following outcomes:
- 79% improved educational expectations
- 70% improved attitudes towards risky behavior
- 81% improved social skills like higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
All volunteers must go through a thorough screening process which includes a formal application, a layered criminal background screening, reference checks and an in-person interview. Volunteers must be 21 years or older, able to meet three to four times per month for a minimum of two-years.

Mission Statement
Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
Description
You have a big opportunity in front of you - to not only impact a child’s life today, but to transform their potential for tomorrow. While things are uncertain, one thing is for sure, our child waitlist continues to grow! We are still looking for volunteers to mentor local youth and have altered our enrollment process to allow for virtual interviewing and training.
Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring program offers three unique one-to-one options: 1) Community-based mentoring, 2) School-based mentoring, 3) mentor2.0. In each, volunteers make a minimum two year commitment to mentoring a child; engage with their mentee 3-4 times per month; and provide role modeling, friendship, and guidance to increase positive youth outcomes.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee develops positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Our mentoring program is proven by independent research to help children who face adversity succeed in and out of school. We hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving three priority youth outcomes-educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors, and social skills such as higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships.
