San Francisco Children's Art Center (SFCAC)
Member of the Board of Directors, Finance and Accounting Lead

Job Description and Expectations

San Francisco Children's Art Center (SFCAC) has been dedicated to preserving art education in San Francisco for 40 years. We are seeking a talented accountant to join our Board of Directors to help the organization with tax and financial matters. This is in addition to the opportunity to advise, govern, and oversee the direction of the organization.

This is your chance to use your accounting and finance super powers to make a difference in the lives of local children, many of whom lack art education at school because of funding cuts! SFCAC not only offers recreational art classes, but also provides art residency programs directly at local schools. As a Board Member, you will serve a two year term, attend monthly Board meetings, lead all tax related work streams, and serve on the Finance committee to further the goals of SFCAC. Approximate time commitment is 3-5 hours a month.

About SFCAC
Established in 1978, SFCAC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, child-centered community art organization that values the importance of process-oriented art instruction. At SFCAC, children experience the advantage of direct contact with professional artists and connections with their peers from different schools and backgrounds in a small, art focused setting. A Reggio Emilia inspired program, children are challenged to make creative choices through age-appropriate art activities including drawing, painting, sculpture and digital photography.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead all tax and bookkeeping related work streams for the organization (preparing annual tax filings, advising the board on tax matters, attend to budgets as needed)
  • Attendance at monthly Board meetings (11 per year) held every second Tuesday of the month (7:30 - 9:00 pm) at SFCAC Studio at Fort Mason and an annual half-day retreat (February)
  • Participation in monthly Committee meetings (in-person or remotely) and an additional 2-4 hours of committee work per month
  • Support of Board fundraising activities including attendance and participation at events and active engagement with annual appeal
Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant with tax and bookkeeping related expertise; experience with non-profits a plus
  • Strong work ethic and ability to meet deadlines
  • Interest in art education, early childhood education, and/or community-based organizations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
Requirements
  • Serve for a minimum of two years
  • Commit to annual fundraising goal (minimum $300/year financial contribution)

*Annual contributions are submitted in April of each year. New Board Members are asked to make their contributions within the first three months of being elected to the Board.

Application Process

Interested candidates should send a resume, brief statement of interest, and three references to sfcac@childrensartcenter.org. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until all seats have been filled. Potential candidates may be invited for a phone interview and meeting with an active Board Member. Board Member positions are elected positions that are approved monthly upon completion of application review and reference checks.

Mission Statement

San Francisco Children's Art Center's mission is to empower children to develop their sense of self through creative exploration.

Description

For nearly 50 years, Children’s Art Center has engaged young people in a process-oriented, visual arts methodology that honors self-expression and individual and collaborative decision-making.

Working in our Fort Mason Art Studio and in classrooms across the city of San Francisco, we support children as they explore their ideas, memories, and feelings. Our teaching artists empower young people to express their identity through their artmaking. We support children as they develop language to share their experiences and stories, learn to solve challenges, and connect with others in meaningful ways through visual story-telling.

As a community-based, non-profit organization, our goal is to make art experiences accessible to every child. We work to reverse inequities and provide access to arts experiences for all young people in our city.

Each year, we serve approximately 1000 San Francisco children, the majority of whom are from economically vulnerable families and youth of color. Our hope is that we can continue to grow and reach more children every year.
