PRIOGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The GED Café at Jubilee Jobs is an open-classroom program where learning is blended, flexible, and individualized. The program offers adult learners the technology and academic support necessary to help them successfully attain the GED Certificate. The GED Café offers daytime and evening sessions--just the right type of flexibility adult students need to be successful!

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Part-time, 8-15 hours per month, flexible

Cafe hours:

Monday and Wednesday 9am-11am

Tuesday and Thursday 6pm-8:30pm

GED Café Tutors work directly with students in one-on one and group tutoring sessions. Tutors help students navigate the 4 subject area tests: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science. Tutors also help Jubilee Jobs keep the classroom and computer lab tidy and learning ready.

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Have a working knowledge of the GED Exam and its components
  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with GED Students in one or more subject areas
  • Assist GED Students to utilize GED Preparation materials, available online resources, and to set up official GED exams and practice tests
  • Provide resources, suggestions, and modeling of good study habits and methods for seeking information
  • Encourage and support students in their pursuit of the GED Certificate and higher education
  • Support the lead teacher and other volunteer tutors in the common goal of creating an inviting, supportive learning environment

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and manners (welcoming, courteous, professional, caring, and eager to help)
  • Excellent computer, verbal, and written communication skills
  • High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of higher education (Candidates in pursuit of a teaching certificate are highly encouraged to volunteer)
  • Prior experience in an urban setting serving low-income, ethnically diverse communities
