During these uncertain times, how can we help?
See below to access our COVID-19 Resource Hub, and to explore our growing directory of COVID-19-specific and virtual volunteering opportunities.
Teach literacy skills to adults reading below a 6th grade level and/or English to new English language learners. Opportunity welcomes creativity and initiative! Volunteers work closely with student's identified goals, which can range from obtaining a job, studying for citizenship, or even reading a bedtime story to a grandchild. No previous experience necessary. You will meet at a library of your choice. Some of our high need areas are New Hyde Park, Westbury, Hicksville, Uniondale, and Freeport. If we don't have a student in your area, you may have to travel to a surrounding library.

Literacy Nassau strives to eradicate illiteracy among adult learners residing in Nassau County. We have served the community for 47 years as a resource for adults interested in enhancing their basic literacy skills and understanding of the English language (ESOL). We provide our volunteer tutors with the training and know-how toward meeting student goals of obtaining a job or even reading a bedtime story to his or her child.
We are a Long Island nonprofit organization that trains volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring sessions to adult learners. Volunteer tutors are recruited from all over Nassau County and they are trained and supported by Literacy Nassau throughout the year. Adult students are matched with tutors to achieve the educational, economic and social goals they and their tutors have identified as important to them. Small group instruction and ESL/citizenship classes are taught by certified teachers. All of our programs are free to students and they meet in Nassau County libraries.
We'll work with your schedule.
