First Graduate
We are a college access nonprofit that helps San Francisco students become the first in their families to attend & graduate from college ready to pursue meaningful careers. Coach 3.0 is a year-long virtual coaching program that connects first-gen students with a volunteer. This program starts from August 2023 to May 2024. Our coach 3.0's Coaches provide 1:1 coaching to our students virtually as they adjust to their transition to college while helping them maintain good academic standing to thrive academically & socially during their first year in college. We are looking for committed volunteers who are interested in supporting & building a genuine relationship with first-generation college students of color! Apply here: https://firstgraduate.dreami.io/main/mentor. Deadline: August 4th, 2023, before midnight.

After receiving your application here https://firstgraduate.dreami.io/main/mentor, we will start the process to pair you with a student, and if you are matched, we will send you a request for a Background check (requirement from the state of California) and a Volunteer Package to sign via DocuSign. All can be done entirely online and the cost to you is $39.

There is also an Orientation + Meet and Greet on Thursday, August 16th, from 5:30 to 6:45 pm PST where you can meet your student and learn more about the program. If you can't make it to the event but you want to be a Coach 3.0, please let me know here: volunteer@firstgraduate.org

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Coaches will help their student set up a work plan & timeline, identify campus resources, and coach them on strategies that will support them to have a successful first year.
  • Coaches will build an authentic relationship with their student that will remind students of their power & play a vital role in keeping our students on their path toward college graduation.
  • Coaches will collaborate with First Graduate's College Team & Volunteer Coordinator to fulfill FG's mission.
Commitment:
  • Regular Check-ins with your student at least twice a month for an hour (total of 2hrs/month) via a virtual platform (Google Hangout, Skype, FaceTime), in person (if possible), or by phone.
  • Attend monthly Coach 3.0 Office Hour check-ins (virtual calls with College Advisors and Volunteer Manager) every month.
Perfect for:
  • Volunteers with a first-gen narrative or those with unique college experience
  • Experience mentoring or working with students of color or experience mentoring others (professional or unofficial)
  • Volunteers who are flexible & empathetic, especially for folks who do not share the first-gen experience
  • Consistent volunteers who are organized and not discouraged by challenges
