Starlite Performing Arts After School Program

This a Grear opportunity for community service for a college student or a tax credit for services rendered.

This position involves students (Kindergarten-5th grade) with homework From One to Two days per week. 2:30-3:30pm after school. It is essential that this volunteer be extremely patient and creative to work with children. Miust be 18 or older. A minimum of a 2 month commitment is requested.

Homework help volunteers will mentor our students who are working on homework assignments, projects, filling out Reading logs and studying for tests.


Key responsibilities:

  • Support Lead volunteer to specific groups of elementary children and redirect as necessary
  • Use positive behavior management in dealing both with children and volunteers
  • Assist elementary school students in completing homework, working on projects, filling out Reading Logs and studying for tests.

We are committed to the presentation of a variety of the finest performing arts events; education and community involvement programs to support, enhance and expand appreciation for the arts.

About Us

Starlite Dance Academy LLC was founded in January 2007 and has been active in charitable causes since its in inception. In an effort to better assist the children and families of our community, Starlite Performing Arts Foundation was Founded as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in March 2012 and is dedicated to the notion that the arts are an integral part of the human spirit.

Education and Community Involvement

Central to the organization’s mission are educational programs and community outreach efforts that encourage young people and adults to fully appreciate and participate in the performing arts.Starlite Performing Arts Foundation’s Education and Community Involvement Programs such as Summer Camp and Dance Programs serve to bring the arts to the broad community, including students and low-income and at-risk populations whose circumstances, financial or otherwise, inhibit their ability to regularly experience the performing arts. Education programs allow students to make connections between the performing arts and their classroom curriculum, personal interests, and career and education goals.

Dance and Performing Arts Program

The performing arts classes promote cognitive, artistic and intellectual development through performance. Instruction in music appreciation, literary expression, theme construction, set/costume design and make-up provides them an opportunity to explore aspects other than actual performance. Our foundation provides a professional, family oriented environment; our focus is on technique and performance quality with a strong yet artistic foundation.

Description

Our Founder

Sharmaine Antwine(Executive Director/Choreographer) is a graduate of Suitland Visual and Performing Arts High School and dancing for over 30 years. Mrs. Antwine has danced with Columbia Park Dance Group under the direction of Ms. Sylvia Alexander performing in local dance competitions, and pageants. Mrs. Antwine also danced with the renowned Northeast Performing Arts Group under the direction of Ms. Rita Jackson, performing in productions such as "The Wiz", "Secret Garden", and "Kids on Broadway". She has competed in many competitions locally and Nationwide such as Showtime at the Apollo and Talent America in New York City. Sharmaine founded Starlite Dance Academy January 2007. She became aware her community was lacking in areas of theVisual and Performing Arts. Sharmaine says "I always wanted to give back to my community my passion and gift for dance".


Starlite Dance Academy has performed at such venues as: The Black Family Reunion at the National Monument, The Beltsville Area Research Center’s Public Field Day, Adams Morgan Day, Blue Streakz Basketball Halftime Show, and local public school productions.
