SCOPE OF WORK: The volunteer instructor will teach two citizenship classes a week at Los Angeles Public Library - Watts The instructor will provide much needed knowledge and support to eligible immigrants in the process of becoming a citizen. The ideal candidate will be fluent in English and Spanish and have knowledge of Civics and U.S. history in addition to teaching experience.
The time commitment for this position is Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30pm - 7:30pm (excluding library holidays)
ALL Materials and training will be provided prior to the start of the program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provide instruction on Civics, U.S. History, and Financial Education
* Prepare students to pass the naturalization interview and exam
* Prepare and teach two classes per week for a period of ten weeks
* Meet with students after class to answer questions or provide one-on-one mock
naturalization interviews as necessary
* Maintain positive working relationship with library staff
REQUIREMENTS:
* Fluent in English
* Solid understanding of Civics, U.S. History, and basic financial concepts
* Some teaching experience preferred
* Reliable transportation
* Must be culturally sensitive and respectful of various backgrounds, lifestyles and beliefs
* Report volunteer hours monthly to volunteer management staff
* Respect client privacy and treat information as confidential
* Flexibility, resourcefulness and an easy-going attitude a plus
This position reports to the Citizenship & Financial Education Coordinator.
