The Clothing Room Assistant is responsible for assisting our clients through the clothing room using good customer service skills. This includes welcoming them, explaining how the clothing room works, assisting in their selections, and weighing and bagging their clothing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Greet clients; make them feel welcomed and comfortable.

  • Explain what each client can receive based on total people in household *

  • Assist clients to make appropriate selections

  • Answer questions *

  • Weigh clothing and record weights on their paperwork, rounding off the weight to the highest number.

  • Keep track of client’s cards/application and file in the appropriate place

  • Hang clothing as time allows.

  • Additional duties may be assigned.

*If clients are taking the wrong amount of clothing, assume that they not understand the rules and explain how much they can take again. Some clients are shy and may not ask for help, but please try to offer assistance or engage them in conversation to assure they are getting what they need.

* If someone does not speak English, please ask Priscilla to help them. However, sometimes using hand gestures works well.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good customer service skills

  • Warm and approachable personality

  • Willingness and ability to handle conflict from clients who may be rude, hostile or combative.

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to carry up to 25 pounds

  • Must pass criminal background check

  • Monday through Saturday 9:15am-11:30am or 12:15pm-3:30pm

LANGUAGE SKILLS-- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions in English. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information on a one to one basis to clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS-- Ability to add, subtract and multiply.

REASONING ABILITY-- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry our instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS--

While performing the duties of this position, the volunteer is regularly required to stand and walk. The volunteer must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT-- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position takes place in the warehouse. While performing the duties of his job, the volunteer is frequently exposed to extreme cold and potentially extreme heat and must dress appropriately. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

FREE Food & Clothing Assistance for over 95 Years!

Since 1923, the Sunshine Division has been providing food and clothing relief to Portland families and individuals in need. Whether due to the loss of a job, domestic crime, illness, or victims of fire or disaster, the Sunshine Division has built a 98-year legacy of mobilizing quickly and efficiently to assist distressed Portlanders.

We offer food assistance six days a week at our N. Thompson location, four days a week at our SE Stark location, and 24 hour food assistance through our partnership with the Portland Police Bureau, who store Sunshine Division food boxes at each police precinct to be dispatched at any time. We also provide no-cost, bulk food and food boxes to 20+ local hunger relief non-profits serving Clark, Clackamas, Washington, and Multnomah counties. In addition to food relief, we offer new and gently-used clothing in our on-site clothing room and fund new school clothes for low income children through our Izzy’s Kid’s program which pairs a Portland police officer with a child for a one-on-one shopping experience.
