Founded in Lexington, MA in 1970, English At Large is a non-profit that provides individual and small group instruction through a volunteer network to adult immigrants and other newcomers who want to acquire English language skills as they adapt to life in the United States. Our vision is that newcomers to the United States will develop the English language skills and acquire the cultural knowledge needed to fully engage in their communities and fulfill their life goals.

Communications and Marketing Intern (10 - 15 hours/week)

The Communications and Marketing Intern works with the Executive Director on public relations and communication strategies. The purpose of this position is to ensure that English At Large stays engaged with our volunteers, learners and donors through email marketing, social media, and other communications tools. This intern will also work on fundraising campaigns that utilize social media and email marketing quite heavily - including our online auction in the Spring.

This position is a good fit for those seeking to gain experience in project management, communications/marketing, non-profit management, event planning, marketing design, and administration.

Responsibilities

  1. Newsletter design
  2. Manage the English At Large general info email account
  3. Organizing content and design for annual report
  4. Maintaining active Twitter and Facebook accounts
  5. Working with staff and board on press releases
  6. Website maintenance
  7. Event planning
  8. Developing marketing materials
  9. Conduct TABE Clas-E or Best Plus assessments for the organization
  10. Administrative/office duties

Qualifications:

Development Intern (10 - 15 hours/week)

The Development Intern works with the Executive Director in building relationships with donors, funders, and community partners.

This position is a good fit for those seeking to gain experience in business administration, project management, strategic planning, fundraising/development, grant writing, non-profit leadership, communications/marketing, event planning, and administration.

  1. Grant research, grant-writing, and grants database management
  2. Manage the English At Large development email account
  3. Develop new partnerships with corporate philanthropic initiatives, foundations, and major donors
  4. Donor and sponsor outreach and relationship management
  5. Event planning
  6. Assist in marketing, communications, and social media
  7. Data management
  8. Working with the Volunteer Coordinator on volunteer engagement initiatives
  9. Assist in mailing appeals & online donations
  10. Assisting the development of program evaluation tools
  11. Conduct TABE Clas-E or Best Plus assessments for the organization
  12. Administrative/office duties

Program Intern (10 - 15 hours/week)

The Program Intern will work closely with the Director of Volunteer Engagement to support operations of the tutoring program. He/she will have regular interaction with English At Large volunteers through program coordination and support.

This position is a good fit for those seeking to gain experience in project management, volunteer management, program evaluation, communications/marketing, non-profit management, and administration.

Responsibilities:

  1. Database management
  2. Manage the English At Large program administration email account
  3. Program quality improvement and analysis

  7. Management of EAL blog
  8. Filing and organizing tutor reports
  9. Conduct TABE Clas-E or Best Plus assessments for the organization
  10. Email/social media marketing & communications

Office Administration Intern (10 - 15 hours/week)

The Office Administration Intern works directly with the Director of Volunteer Engagement to support the operations of our tutoring and conversation group programs. This position is a good fit for those seeking to gain experience in project management, organization and office management, volunteer management, communications/marketing, non-profit management, and administration.

Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain all learner records on ACCESS and SMARTT databases
  2. Reception area duties
  3. Generate program progress reports
  4. Manage the English At Large office email account
  5. Note taking at staff meetings
  6. Phone and email communications with learners and volunteers
  7. Maintaining office operations
  8. Filing
  9. Conduct TABE Clas-E or Best Plus assessments for the organization

Qualifications:

  2. Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and patiently over phone and e-mail are a must

Volunteer Program Intern (10 - 15 hours/week)

The Volunteer Program Intern will work directly with the Volunteer Coordinator to support the tutoring and conversation group programs. The Volunteer Program Intern has two sets of responsibilities:

Program Administration:

  1. Manage attendance and waiting lists for English conversation groups and one-to-one tutoring
  2. Conduct telephone screenings with learners on one one-to-one tutoring waitlist
  3. Communicate with volunteers and learners by phone and email
  4. Enter data into internal and state databases, manage files, and perform general office administration duties as needed.
  5. Conduct TABE Clas-E or Best Plus assessments for the organization
  6. Manage the EAL "volunteer" and "learn" email accounts
  7. Potential projects include:
    1. Design procedures to enhance volunteer pool and promote retention
    2. Create tools for program evaluation
    3. Develop training materials for volunteers

Outreach/Recruitment:

  1. Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator and the Director of Volunteer Engagement on volunteer recruitment efforts
  2. Identify community organizations, associations, and groups that may offer potential volunteer tutor pools within English At Large service area
  3. Provide information to community leaders and potential volunteers about English At Large services, goals, and volunteer responsibilities
  4. Assist in the development/design of outreach materials, distribute materials to create increased visibility and interest in English At Large in our communities
