Why make a welcome basket?
Upon entering Hilda's Place shelter, many of our residents hold damaged beliefs about their sense of dignity and self-worth. Though this way of thinking is deeply ingrained, we know that everyone can find greater happiness, health, and self-sufficiency once they have a stable place and supportive people working with them. Being able to take care of themselves and to feel and look good can be the start of this change.
We invite you to help in this process and welcome our new guests to Hilda’s Place. Through your generosity you’ll be one of the first supporters of their transition. When you prepare a welcome basket, you’re providing the soap and shampoo, and also the encouragement our residents need to move out of homelessness.
The specifics:
Purchase the items listed below and assemble in a shower caddy or basket.
The kit includes: Household size (not hotel samples) talc powder, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion, razor, washcloth, shower shoes, plastic basket, and a personal note of encouragement (optional).
Total cost is around $12 at a dollar store.
Donations can be dropped off 6pm-9pm any night of the year at the shelter, 1458 Chicago Ave. (We are housed in the basement of the Lake Street Church. The basement entrance is at the rear, just off of the alley.)
