Foundation for a College Education (FCE), located in East Palo Alto, California, is a nonprofit organization that offers a comprehensive college access and success program. FCE’s mission is to increase the number of students of color from East Palo Alto and surrounding communities who graduate from a four-year college or university.
STEAM is a year-round program that helps middle school students develop the curiosity, persistence, and resilienceto become successful learners and adolescents.
As a STEAM tutor, you will join a team of lead teachers and aides committed to helping middle school students become effective learners, critical thinkers and communicators.
Middle school is a critical time in a young person’s emotional and academic development. During this period, students develop the skills, behaviors and habits that will ensure that they are ready for college preparatory courses in high school.
When you work directly with students enrolled in the STEAM program, you’re not only sharing academic and life-planning skills, you’re serving as a role model. Your own experiences - college, career, books you’ve read, places you’ve lived - can open new horizons for students just starting to explore the world.
Responsibilities
Work with students on homework assignments and projects.
Serve as a role model and share your academic experiences.
Encourage students to attend college.
- Hold students to high expectations.
Qualifications
Emotional maturity and the ability to handle middle school students.
Enthusiasm, energy, and a sense of humor.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Prior tutoring, mentoring or coaching experience with middle school students desirable, though not required.
A passion for working with first-generation students of color and promoting their educational development.

Description
Our staff of Program Managers provides students with 1:1 advising, standardized test prep, scholarship guidance, internship preparation, community building, and programs of professional mentoring and mental health.
We have been recognized by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce, Lumina Foundation, and the Educational Policy institute as an outstanding college access and completion organization.
