How would your life be different if you couldn’t write a note to your child’s teacher or communicate with her doctor? For many of our client mothers, writing in English is a challenging task.

By volunteering to be a Pen Pal with one of our client moms, you will provide the encouragement and inspiration she needs to become a competent writer. You will also help her build the confidence she needs to interact with people from different backgrounds and education levels.

You will exchange 7 letters during the 2016-2017 Pen Pal Program, which runs October to May. Your Pen Pal will write the first letter and you will have about a week to respond. Your letters will be at least one-page (8.5 x 11) in length.

The program culminates with an in-person meeting between you and your Pen Pal at our center in mid-May, 2016. This is a required, on-site meeting in Pasadena, CA!

About Families Forward Learning Center

Location:

980 North Fair Oaks Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91103, US

Mission Statement

Families Forward Learning Center prepares families isolated by poverty, lack of education and inadequate social support to succeed in school and in life by increasing the skills and education of both mother and child.

Description

Families Forward is built on two guiding principles: in order for significant, long-term change to occur within an at-risk family, you must reach both parent and child and educate them together; and, the most critical time to reach a family is when children are proven to be most vulnerable and impressionable, between birth and 5 years-old.

Our clientele are English-learning, low-income mothers in the Pasadena community. They take intensive literacy and parenting skills courses onsite, gaining critical skills in English and learning to be their child's most important teacher. Simultaneously, their children are also on site, playing, learning, and thriving in our early childhood program (ages six weeks to five years).

Our services prepare children for kindergarten and empower mothers to help their children succeed in school and in life.
