Roles and Responsibilities
Purpose of the Committee:
As a committee of the Board of Trustees, helps the Board carry out its due diligence function related to assuring fiscal health through philanthropy and marketing. Partners with staff to institutionalize the philanthropic process within the Board and its individual members, assuring a donor-centered organization. Committee is chaired by a board member.
Reports to: Board of Trustees and takes direction from the institution’s strategic plan and marketing and development plan.
Staff to the Committee: Director of Marketing and Development (executive director only if DMD position is vacant).
Committee membership and operations: Members include both Board and non-board members. All committee work is done in partnership with and through the leadership and enabling of assigned staff. The committee does not usurp the authority of the Board, and neither directs nor oversees staff.
Frequency of meetings: As necessary, estimated at six times per year.
Scope of Work:
Partner with the Governance Committee (once it is formed) to assure appropriate articulation of roles and performance expectations in development (i.e. for marketing and development committee, Board, individual board members).
Devise and recommend philanthropy and marketing policies and recommend to the Board for action, including any limitation policies.
Help nurture a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, and assure that all donors of time and money are respected and honored.
Assure that the Board and individual Board members are adequately educated about the basic principles and best practices in marketing and fundraising, including the design of a donor-centered organization.
Through the marketing and development planning process: help establish the charitable contributions goals for the annual budget; devise the annual fund plan for action by the Board; and recommend results and benchmarks for action by the Board.
Review results and evaluate ROI compared to the plan. Identify trends and implications and engage the Board in strategic dialogue and decision-making regarding marketing and fundraising.
Help the Board articulate the case for support directed at specific audiences.
Establish event committees and task forces to carry out specific marketing and development activities. Monitor their performance.
Provide personal follow-up to individual Board members to monitor their participation.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Attend and be an active participant in committee meetings either in person or via conference calls.
Volunteer on at least one special event’s sub-committee or task force.
Work with the director of marketing and development in creating and managing the yearly marketing and development plan.
Analyze relationships with current and prospective major donors and funders, and develop individualized strategies to cultivate or strengthen those relationships.
Analyze relationships with current and prospective corporate sponsors, devise sponsorship packages, and work with staff and Board to develop relationships.
Work with Finance Committee to determine annual marketing and development budget.
Work with staff and outside consultants as required to plan and execute fundraising and friend-raising events.
Along with appropriate key staff, meet with current and prospective donors and funders.
Tap respective networks for potential donors of money, time and in-kind support.
Determine Board fundraising expectations and goals; provide guidance for Board members on meeting goals; track progress toward goals both for individual Board members and for the Board as a whole.
Help to recruit other committee and sub-committee members.
