The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) volunteer tutors are trained to provide instruction in reading, writing, and speaking English to small groups of 3-6 adult students. Classes are also offered in math, GED prep, U.S. Citizenship, and more. It is a mutually rewarding, life-changing experience for both student and tutor! Tutoring opportunities are available in Hartford and East Hartford on a variety of days and times.
Before beginning as a tutor, prospective volunteers are required to complete the following orientation & training process: 1) Complete our online volunteer application at www.lvgh.org 2) Visit our Hartford Literacy Center for a Welcome Meeting & Tour 3) Complete a 1-hour online ProLiteracy training 4) Observe 2 classes prior to training workshops 5) Participate in a 3-session training workshop 6) Complete two student teaching sessions. Our tutor training workshops take place three times a year (fall, winter, and spring).
