Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) volunteer tutors are trained to provide instruction in reading, writing, and speaking English to small groups of 3-6 adult students. In person classes are set up to keep students and tutors at a safe distance and masked are required by everyone. Some classes are also taught online. Classes are also offered in math, GED prep, U.S. Citizenship, and more. It is a mutually rewarding, life-changing experience for both student and tutor! Tutoring opportunities are available in Hartford and East Hartford on a variety of days and times.
Before beginning as a tutor, prospective volunteers are required to complete the following orientation & training process: 1) Complete our online volunteer application at www.lvgh.org 2) Visit our Hartford Literacy Center for a Welcome Meeting & Tour 3) Observe 2 classes prior to training workshops 4) Participate in a 3-session training workshop 5) Complete two student teaching sessions. Our tutor training workshops take place three times a year (fall, winter, and spring).
