Volunteer Dog Kennel Attendants Needed.

Position description: Dog Kennel Attendants help care and comfort the dogs in the kennels. Kennel attendants also provide customer service to the public and assist them by answering questions about the adoption process as well as about particular animals. They are also active in teaching the dogs basic obedience commands with the goal of making their stay at the shelter more stimulating. Training also helps the dogs make an easier transition into their new homes.

Volunteers must have excellent communication skills, able to work independently and must practice safe animal handling per MHS protocols. This position requires a tolerance for loud noise and strong smells. Volunteers interact with dogs of various sizes, shapes, breeds and manners, as well as being able to lift up to 50 Lbs.

Duties vary depending on shift but could include: Maintaining a healthy environment for our animals. Cleaning inside cages as well as outside yards, socializing and comforting the dogs; teaching basic obedience commands; monitoring behavior on daily log; preparing and giving dog treats; scooping poop; assisting with laundry and dishes; safely walking, and preparing food and feeding dogs.

This is a high animal contact position.

Select volunteers who have been at MHS for six months have the opportunity to work with some of our more challenging dogs on training, behavior modification and stress reduction.

Shifts: Morning Open Shifts: Monday thru Friday 8:30- 11:30 am, and Saturday-Sunday 8-11am

Mid-afternoon Walking Shifts: Wednesday through Friday 12-3 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Late Afternoon Close Shifts Sunday-Saturday 2pm -5:30pm

Volunteers are scheduled for the same shift each week. Time commitment: A weekly shift for three hours for a minimum of three months.

Kennel Attendants are required to attend: A volunteer orientation. A two hour hands-on skills training, as well as Monthly Volunteer Meetings.

The Meriden Humane Society is a "No Kill", Non Profit, privately run animal shelter located in Meriden,Ct. Our Mission : We believe it is our responsibility to protect and improve the lives of abused, abandoned, and homeless cats and dogs, and to place them in loving permanent homes. We provide spay and neuter services and any and all necessary medical care for pets. We work diligently to educate the public on the importance of pet sterilization, responsible pet ownership, Disease control, as well as the Humane Treatment of Animals. The Meriden Humane Society has been a "No Kill" animal shelter since 1836. We are a private non profit organization and are not affiliated with any other Humane Society or rescue organization. We are funded by the generous people who believe that "Life Matters".

Description

The Meriden Humane Society is a no kill privately run animal shelter located in Meriden,CT. We have up to 65 cats and 15 dogs at any given time.

We believe it is our moral responsibility to protect and improve the lives of abused, abandoned, and homeless cats and dogs, and to place them in loving, permanent homes.

We work directly with high kill pounds, cruelty investigations as well as private citizens that can no longer care for their animals.

We are supported by patrons and residents who donate to our facility.

In addition to processing adoptions and caring for our animals, we have several programs available to the residents of Meriden, and the surrounding towns.

A trap neuter and release program.

A monthly feeding program for those who need assistance with food for their animals.

There are many opportunities for volunteers, and teen volunteers and groups are welcome!
