2018 Memorial Water Lantern Release

For decades, remembering loved ones by lighting a lantern and floating on water has been ritual filled with emotion and provided a sensation of peace. Please join Infants Remembered In Silence, Inc. (c) in remembering your precious child at the Memorial Water Lantern Release on Saturday August 18, 2018.

Ordering Memorial Water Lanterns:

  • Lanterns can be ordered in memory of your child regardless of where you live, when the child died, or the cause of death. Order online at www.irisRemembers.org ($2 service fee for online orders).
  • Lanterns can be picked up at the IRIS Office, ordered online or by returning the order form by August 10th.
  • Memorial Lanterns can be decorated in advance and returned to the IRIS Office, decorated and brought with you to the release, or they can be decorated the day of the Release. IRIS will have markers, stickers, etc. on hand for your use.
  • A Limited Number of Memorial Water Lanterns will be for sale at the event. Order now to guarantee yours.
  • If you are unable to join us on August 18th we will be honored to release your Memorial Lantern for you. Decorating service is also available. Pictures will be posted on Facebook and on the IRIS website: www.irisRemembers.org
  • NOTE: The Rice Paper Lanterns that we saved for you did not survive the 2017 release. Rice Paper melts when it gets wet. Last years humidity, rain, and fog melted the Rice Paper Lanterns.

Timeline:


4:00 -7:30 pm Memorial Water Lantern Decorating Area Will Be Open

You are welcome to order/decorate as many lanterns as you like Fee: $10 per lantern

5:00 pm IRIS Picnic- bring your own picnic supper and join with others in the park or find your own secluded area to reflect while you eat.

7:45 pm Program

7:57 pm Sunset Begins

8:00 pm Lantern Release will begin

8:27 pm Twilight End (Dark)

9:00 -9:30 pm Lanterns Removed From Water

9:00 -9:30 pm Dessert - provided by IRIS

Those wishing to keep their Memorial Water Lantern can take them home following the event or pick them up August 20 - 24, 2018 at the IRIS office.

Decorating your Memorial Water Lanterns:

  • Be creative with your Water Lantern! You have four (4) sides of the rice paper Lantern to decorate. You can include personal messages, poems, pictures, rub-ons, stickers, photos or anything else that you would like.
  • IRIS will provide permanent markers and stickers for you to decorate your lantern at the event. You are welcome to bring other embellishments and decorations.
  • Lanterns will be floating on the water, it is important to keep the decorations and embellishments light weight and water friendly.
  • If you choose to use a floating tray for your lantern, you will have a three (3) inch area around the lantern for flowers, etc. Remember the Lanterns will be floating so be aware of weight.
  • Precious keepsakes should NOT be included!
  • Lanterns will be launched from the canoe launch area; you will be permitted to enter the water if you wish, please wear protective footwear.

What to Bring:

  • If you would like, Lawn chairs, blankets, picnic supper, bug spray, suntan lotion, etc.
  • IRIS will provide bottled water throughout the day. Dessert will be served at 9 pm.
  • Cameras and Video cameras are welcome.

FAQ:

  • Can I pick up my Lantern early and decorate it at home?

Yes, you can stop into theIRISoffice and pick up the rice paper to decorate at home.

  • Can you mail the Lantern to me to decorate?

Yes, we do ask that you cover the cost of mailing and that you have it back to us by August 24th.

  • Can I order more than one lantern?

Yes, you can order as many as you would like.

  • Can I order a Lantern in memory of someone other than my child/children?

We are all someone’s child; you can remember whoever you would like.

  • I can’t attend on August 18, 2018 but would like a lantern; can you help me with that?

If you order a lantern(s) we would be honored to decorate and launch it for you.

If you want to decorate it yourself please stop in and pick it/them up.

Lanterns must be returned to the IRIS Office or ordered by August 10th at 5 pm.

  • Can I have the Lantern following the event?

Yes, however it will depend on the weather and condition of the lanterns when the candles burn out. Lanterns can be picked up at the event or at the IRIS office from August 20th -24th, 2018.

Lanterns remaining in the office will be relit on October 15th, National Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Infants Remembered In Silence, Inc. (IRIS) is an organization designed to help parents, family, friends, and professionals cope with the devastating loss of a baby in early pregnancy (miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, etc.) or death from premature birth, stillbirth, neo-natal death, birth defects, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), sudden unexplained death of a child (SUDC), illness, accidents, and all other types of infant and early childhood death. This assistance includes emotional support at the time of the death and the years that follow.

Description

Volunteers do 99% of the work at IRIS. Jobs include everything from being an IRIS Advocate, cleaning, office work, yard work, to knitting burial blankets, hats, and booties.
