About

Volunteers staff the Information Desk in the visitor’s entrance lobby of the hospital. They give out patient room information and directions for visitors when entering the hospital. They walk visitors to patient's room sometimes if needed to further assist them. They might get a wheelchair for a visitor or someone in need.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND PROCEDURES:

General Procedures:

  1. Greets all visitors to the hospital and acts as public relations person for hospital by being as pleasant and helpful as possible to every hospital visitor.

  2. Informs visitors of patient's room number and directs people to various areas of the hospital.

  3. Provides directions and information as needed by the hospital visitor.

  4. Advises the caller of the patient’s room number or nurses' station.

  5. Gives caller the patient's room number and telephone number and may transfer call if asked by caller to do so or if able to.

  6. Understands the policies that affect the information given out at the Information Desk.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING OR EXPERIENCE:

    Must be familiar with the location of the units in the hospital. Must complete Cardinal Hill Hospital orientation that is volunteer specific. Must complete the Information Desk training and orientation. Be dependable, have a positive attitude when volunteering and respect the patient's rights. Must maintain patient confidentiality.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Hearing what is being requested of you.

2. Excellent interpersonal skills. Good communication and listening skills with children and adults.

3. Must be willing to accept change and be sensitive to needs of patient and families in stressful situations.

4. Ability to communicate directions in a simple manner and work as a team member.

Age Specific Competencies

Provides patient services based on identified needs/developmental level for all patient populations; incorporation of age-specific characteristics in patient education, communication and planning; provision of individualized care relevant to patient needs; and recognition, monitoring and provision of interventions as appropriate.
