People Incorporated was the first mental health services provider in the Midwest to serve the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population. People Incorporated Deaf Mental Health Services (DMHS) offers a variety of coordinated services for adults who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing or Deaf-blind, use or want to use sign language as their primary mode of communication and who experience a mental illness. This program is culturally and linguistically accessible to this population. There are two components of this program: Drop-In Center and Outreach Services.

Our ideal volunteer would be fluent in ASL (American Sign Language) and have experience working with adults with mental illnesses and other disabilities. The volunteer would be responsible for running member meetings, taking minutes, and interacting with clients during activities at the Drop-In Center and also for clients who are part of our Deaf Mental Health Services program. Time Commitment: Every Wednesday from 4:30-8:30pm (DSL), Every Tuesday from 4-8pm and Every Friday 3-9pm (DMHS). Days or hours required per week. Flexible but must be during posted hours.

Mission Statement

Supporting mental health and wellness in our community through collaboration and integration of care.

Description

People Incorporated Mental Health Services is a Twin Cities-based nonprofit providing a spectrum of services through nearly 60 programs in the greater metro area. Supporting mental health and wellness in our community through collaboration and integration of care is our mission, and it means that we provide people with mental illness with the help they need to avoid hospitalization and institutionalization and live hopeful, meaningful lives in the community. We specialize in serving people who have both mental illness, and a secondary impediment such as: Deafness, chemical dependency, a developmental disability, homelessness, or seizure disorder. We’re known for creating innovative services tailored to the needs of each individual-and we’ve been doing it successfully for nearly 50 years.
