Mission Statement
The Wood Family Foundation (WFF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in June 2011 by Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood and his wife, Sarah. WFF works to improve the lives of children in Chicago by raising funds and awareness for its children's programs. We believe a child’s potential should never be underestimated, especially during that crucial time before teenhood, when they start making choices for themselves, gaining experience and forging their way toward a meaningful life. But they can’t always do it on their own. That’s why the Wood Family Foundation created Pitch In, a long-term, mentor-based initiative designed to help promising Chicago grade-schoolers bridge the gap into adolescence. Involving kids as well as their caretakers, Pitch In will inspire students to achieve independence, set goals and reach milestones. All kids deserve a shot at a successful future. If we all Pitch In, they’ll get there.
Description
The Pitch In mentoring program consists of monthly themes such as Chicago geography, theatre, book club, math and money, music and more. We combine educational activities and life skills into group activities each month. We also believe parent engagement is crucial to our success which is why we host family dinners at the end of each month. At the dinners we share a healthy meal together and students present what they learned that month. The Pitch In program is looking for our mentors to join our next class of 4th graders this October.Mentors serve as caring adults that join us a minimum of twice a month to participate in group activities with the mentees.
