Waterloo Recreation Area, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
We need your help hand pulling spotted knapweed, an invasive weed that could take over in this neat prairie remnant. Removing this plant will improve habitat for native species and give the native wildflowers more room to grow. Please wear long pants and long sleeves as some individuals are sensitive to this plant. Join volunteer steward Sheila B. for a productive workday; contact her with any day-of questions at 734-972-1428. Meet on Waterloo Road just west of M-52. Roadside parking. Mission Statement
To preserve, protect and restore the natural and cultural resources present within Michigan State Parks for this and future generations.
Description
Volunteers will help steward natural areas (woodlands, wetlands, prairies, etc.) within Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These efforts will help protect entire ecosystems as well as individual species - especially those in greatest need of conservation ("Species of Special Concern" and those whose populations are "Threatened" or "Endangered").
Currently, Core Volunteer Stewards are volunteering at monthly volunteer workdays on weekends at 7 southeast Michigan parks and recreation areas. Volunteers do a variety of activities throughout the year including: removing invasive non-native plants, collecting seed from native plants, and planting native seedlings. Volunteers can also participate in a number of Individual Projects like Insect Monitoring, Photographic Monitoring and Invasive Plant Mapping - to name a few.
No previous experience is need to participate, though some training might be necessary for certain projects.
