Did you know that Maine has the highest rate of hunger in New England?
Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program and the Food Security Coalition of Mid Coast Maine seek volunteers to work at community food pantries to educate people about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and help them apply and access this crucial program.
SNAP is unequivocally the nation’s first and most effective line of defense against hunger. It not only provides low-income people with reliable grocery money, it also creates a stimulus in the local economy by generating $9 in activity for every $5 spent with SNAP. The vast majority of SNAP recipients are children, the elderly and disabled (~70%) and most households include someone who is working or worked in the past 12 months.
Key responsibilities:
Prescreen individuals for SNAP eligibility
Assist eligible clients with the SNAP application
Provide information about SNAP benefits and other available food resources
Stay informed about SNAP policy and program changes
Maintain record log and submit to supervisor
