The City Tutors (CT) is working with College Now to support students in their Saturday Human Biology course. We are currently looking for two embedded tutors to support two sections of this course. This is a great opportunity for a student studying science education or interested in tutoring science. In this role, you would work collaboratively with an instructor to improve students’ performance, while being supported and guided by an experienced academic support professional.
As a tutor for the biology course in College Now, you would commit to three hours on Saturday, broken down as the last two hours of the 9-1:20PM course with the possibility of an extra hour after class. You would identify and support students who are struggling, participate during the lecture to support the class on the whole, and provide feedback to the instructor regarding students' concerns and difficulties that can lead to changes in future lessons. You might also design assignments, identify/track students who are struggling and create for them differentiated instruction.
CT's embedded tutoring program has been successful in helping students gain access to support that they otherwise could not receive given their limited availability to be on campus Saturdays. Having a tutor in the class early in the semester will allow us to push to reduce withdrawals and student failure rates. Your work would not only help the class, but help us improve this model so that we can expand it across all the courses within College Now, and across departments where appropriate as well.
To apply, you must:
- have received an A- or A in introduction to biology
- have a GPA at or above 3.2, or have completed a degree in biology/other natural sciences
- submit biweekly reports, and meet through Google Hangout/in person with the director on a biweekly basis.
- be willing to complete 10 hours of College Reading and Learning Aligned (CRLA) training.
Training days will be determined based on your schedule and that of the Tutor Training Coordinators.

Mission Statement
The City Tutors (CT) is a NYC wide volunteer tutoring and mentoring hub that ensures historically underserved communities have equitable access to resources that are fundamental to educational and professional success.
Description
Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.
We see tutoring as a way to empower individuals to work in the community. We provide flexible times, convenient locations, and meaningful experiences, allowing more community members to participate and to support community partners for longer.
We believe tutoring must be a reflective act that both helps strengthen individuals' support of others and helps individuals better understand themselves. We provide our tutors with access to industry mentors who help connect the work they are doing with us with what they've done in the past and what they want to do in the future.
We believe in leveraging the workforce skills of our community of volunteers by pairing those in need of professional support with industry experts who can provide insight into specific fields and feedback on professional documents.
We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.
