Operations Volunteer Position

Mission: The Latino Union of Chicago collaborates with low-income immigrant workers to develop the tools necessary to collectively improve their social and economic conditions.

Role: The Latino Union of Chicago is seeking an Operations Volunteer to complete independent projects and provide administrative support to the management and organizing staff. Hours and focus of work are flexible depending on availability, skills, and interests. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least 3 hours a week for a minimum of two months.

Job Duties:

  • Data entry, filing, spreadsheet management
  • Answer phones, receive, and properly distribute messages
  • Update and enter contacts in our database system
  • Preparation of materials and documents for staff, member, board meetings
  • Assist in event planning (invites, logistics, program, etc.)
  • Conduct independent research for the different organization programs and administrative staff
  • Manage donor and member mailings
  • Create and update flyers, brochures
  • Manage inventory of office supplies and materials for workshops

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent organization, communications, and computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Some familiarity and/or interest in social justice movements, especially in labor and immigration issues

Compensation:

This is a volunteer position, however, the candidate will obtain valuable experience in administrative tasks, event planning, and social justice movements. High school students may receive community learning service hours and college students may receive internship or service learning credit.

Description

Founded in 2000 by women temp workers, Latino Union collaborates with low-income immigrant workers to develop the tools necessary to collectively improve social and economic conditions.

Organizational achievements include passing the Illinois Day and Temporary Labor Service Act in 2002 that regulates temporary worker agencies; passing Sanctuary legislation in Cicero, IL in 2008 that protects 85,000 immigrants; and passing the strongest statewide protections for workers against wage theft - or unpaid wages for completed work - as a member of the Just Pay For All Coalition in 2010.

In 2011, Latino Union launched the Chicago Coalition of Household Workers, a group of nannies, caregivers and housecleaners seeking respect, equality and dignity at home and in the community. In 2013, Latino Union united with seven1 other Chicago based workers centers and the Working Hands Legal Clinic to found the Raise the Floor Alliance to create systemic change and bring together expertise in low wage worker community organizing. The organization is an affiliate of the National Domestic Workers' Alliance (NDWA) and a founder and member of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON).
