Our Early Stage Memory Loss(ESML) programs help create community for people living with memory loss. Our Zoo Walk is a weekly social engagement and fitness opportunity for people living with ESML.The program takes place at the Woodland Park Zoo and provides a chance for physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and social connection in the beautiful outdoor setting.
The Zoo Walk Volunteer, with support of the ESML Coordinator, will help welcome participants and engage them in friendly conversation while maintaining a safe and supportive atmosphere during the walk. Volunteers also help track participants & perform weekly reminder calls or emails. Training and support is provided by our Early Stage Memory Loss Manager.
"When I began leading the ESML walk, I realized that I did carry a stigma based on a fear of not knowing how to interact with people with memory loss and what to expect from them. The greatest thing I've learned is that people with memory loss are just people. And even though they have memory loss-they're here. They may not be able to respond to you the way people without memory loss respond, but when they give you a hug, grab your hand, look you in the eye-they're here."
