Bereavement Caller Volunteers
Losing a loved one is devastating.
When our patients pass on, Hospice of the Chesapeake doesn't consider our job done. We commit ourselves to supporting their surviving family in the healing process. Our bereavement callers are an integral part of our team, helping us reach out to the survivors and offering support in every way we can.
Hospice of the Chesapeake is a fully licensed, community-based non-profit organization. We provide services to terminally ill patients at the place that they call home - regardless of their age or ability to pay. In order to provide the best possible service to our patients and their families, Hospice of the Chesapeake depends on the generous support from the community, key business partners, and philanthropic operations to improve the quality of life for those in our community experiencing advanced illness or bereavement.
What Kind of Volunteering Would I Do?
As a Bereavement Caller Volunteer, you will call the deceased patient's surviving family, and listen to clients and empathize with their situation. You would also provide survivors information on our other services, including free bereavement counseling for up to 13 months.
A caller will typically make between 10-20 calls in a session, and sessions are generally 2 hours in duration. Volunteers are welcome to stay longer and perform more calls if they choose.
Where Will I Volunteer?
Our bereavement callers work out of our office location in Largo, MD. This location is not a hospice, but where we provide on-site bereavement counseling and a number of other administrative services.
