ORGANIZATION: The Garden School Foundation

  • 3 people are interested

The Garden School Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides interactive garden-based education to under-served children across LA in our outdoor living classrooms. Since 2003, we've been turning asphalt into ecosystems, working to create a healthy, educated and aware future generation that care for their bodies and for the earth. Currently we are serving at five elementary schools and serve over 2,500 students and their families, 80% of whom live at or below the federal poverty level. We bring life to what's taught in the classroom and give kids the tools they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

The Garden School is looking for interns who will play a vital role in helping the development team implement a sustainable outreach program at farmers markets across LA. As a Garden School Outreach Intern, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about outreach and nonprofit communications in a hands on way
  • Get experience in nonprofit development, working alongside the Garden School Foundation’s development team and Director of Development
  • Engage and communicate with people in a lively market environment
  • Make a difference in the lives of our students as we create support, increase engagement, and get people interested in the Garden School.
  • And importantly, have a whole bunch of fun! Who doesn't love farmers markets?

As an Intern your responsibility will include:

  • Staffing our outreach table at several farmers markets throughout LA, possibly including the MarVista Farmers Market, Larchmont Farmer’s Market, and Silverlake Farmer’s Market.
  • Pick up tabling supplies from the office, including our table and canopy, and then setting up our table at farmers markets.
  • Managing volunteers and working alongside your fellow interns and the GSF development team.
  • Striking up conversations with market-goers, effectively describing our program and volunteer opportunities, and encouraging involvement in our work in an uplifting, inspiring way
  • Being a friendly & confident representative of GSF

An Ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics/qualifications:

  • The desire to learn about nonprofit outreach, volunteer programs, and marketing
  • Experience working in customer service, marketing or outreach in some capacity
  • A strong interest in food advocacy, sustainability, environmental education and urban gardening and a love of farmers markets
  • A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to get up early and work outside during the weekend
  • An outgoing personality and strong verbal skills
  • Proven reliability and timeliness
  • Internship candidate must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable car that can hold a 5x10 folding table.

Outreach Interns’ main role will be to be responsible for our monthly farmers market tables. In addition to this, they may assist and learn from the development team by helping with event planning, database management, volunteer management and grant research. Interns will work around 12-14 hours a week, start dates and schedules to be discussed. There is a 3 month minimum commitment.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter to Shelby Crowell at shelby@gardenschoolfoundation.org

Mission Statement

GSF’s mission is to provide meaningful education for underserved youth in Los Angeles through garden-based learning in outdoor living classrooms.

Description

The Garden School Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit that provides interactive garden-based education to underserved children across Los Angeles in our beautiful living classrooms. Since 2003, we’ve been turning asphalt into ecosystems, working to create a healthy, educated and aware future generation that care for their bodies and for the earth.

GSF unlocks the learning potential of school gardens with our Seed-to-Table curriculum. This unique standards-based educational platform takes classroom learning and turns it into an interactive and hands on experience, incorporating science, math, and literacy with cooking and gardening classes. Lessons are carefully constructed to make learning interactive, fun and memorable while instilling healthy eating habits and fostering a connection with nature.

Our edible school gardens provide a living laboratory where children can play, learn and explore, but they also serve as a community center where families, teachers and community partners can meet and collaborate. The Garden School foundation’s mission is always to bring the community together, through after school activities, workday events, festivals, workshops and more.
