Sequoia Adult School Scholars (SASS) is seeking Board members who are committed to our cause: helping adult immigrants continue their education in community college. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to our target population, some Board experience, and experience in either marketing, accounting/finance or fund development. All Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings and also volunteer an additional two to four hours a month on Board-related projects. This is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a young and vibrant non-profit that is having a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of deserving students. Mission Statement

Upward Scholars provides adult immigrants the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and vocational support.

Description

Upward Scholars supports students with the following:

  • Textbooks, which can cost several hundred dollars a semester.
  • Bus passes, which cost $320 a semester, for all students who need to take the bus to college.
  • Tutors, by community volunteers who meet with students at a time and location that is convenient to the student and tutor.
  • Laptops for students who need them.
  • College advising to help students choose classes, resolve financial aid issues, and navigate the college bureaucracy. Silicon Valley Community Foundation makes this possible.
