ORGANIZATION: Behind the Book

Behind the Book works directly in New York City public schools, providing rich, innovative literacy programs in urban classrooms. Working with students from pre-K to 12th grade, Behind the Book identifies books that speak to the students, and partners with teachers to create immersive curriculum units that bring the authors into the classroom. Through a series of workshops, authors discuss their book and teach a genre of writing, encouraging students to see themselves as readers and writers.

Behind the Book seeks a Social Media Intern to work with our Development Manager to coordinate a range of social media platforms. The position is ideal for a go-getter with a strategic mind and excellent communication skills who wants to be an integral part of implementing BtB’s social media strategy. The position will be based at our Harlem office, with a commitment is for one semester, a minimum of two days per week.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and posting social media content on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms

  • Updating BtB’s blog (WordPress) regularly with new content that features stories and pictures from our school programs and other news of interest from our organization

  • Selecting and editing pictures, student work, and videos related to our programming for the blog, social media, and newsletter


QUALIFICATIONS: Detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to manage tasks independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and experience with social media sites required. Experience with WordPress and Mail Chimp a plus.
