Youth Development Internship

Basic Function: Youth Development Intern plan and lead groups of children in fun, educational, and developmentally-appropriate activities such as Social Recreation, Arts & Crafts, Physical Education and Outdoor/Environment. They build relationships, act as mentors, and model good decision-making and social skills. They also help to ensure inclusion and safety for all members.
Internship Responsibilities:
- Creates an environment that promotes and stimulates program participation.
- Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
- Maintains a safe environment for members both physically and emotionally.
- Effectively plans and leads programs, services and activities to members.
- Assist in designing a variety of age appropriate activities addressing responsible decision making.
- Plan, prepare, and facilitate small groups of up to 15 youth ages 5-18.
- Know and use positive youth guidance techniques including, but not limited to, positive role modeling, conflict resolution and positive discipline.
- Participates as an active, positive team member with supervisor, other staff, volunteers and members.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned by direct supervisor.
- Work to achieve the mission of the organization.
- Able to job shadow other staff at Boys & Girls Clubs.
Qualifications:
- One to three months of experience working with children, even if informal.
- Able to relate well with children and manage groups of them.
- Willing and able to plan programs and activities.
- Ability to be flexible, adaptable and mobile when supervising groups of children.
- Must demonstrate maturity and good decision-making and be aware of good personal boundaries.
- Comfortable talking about personal health and wellness issues, (i.e. bullying, sexual intercourse, healthy decision making, drugs, alcohol, bullying) that affect the everyday life of children and teenagers.
- Ability to work independently and as a team.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work well with youth and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to be flexible, adaptable and mobile when supervising groups of children.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Program Hours Available:
School Year Hours -
Club: 1 PM to 9 PM Monday-Friday
KIDSTOP: 2 PM to 6 PM Monday-Friday
Summer Hours -
Club: 12 PM to 6 PM Monday-Friday
KIDSTOP: 7 AM to 6 PM Monday-Friday
*Intern schedule will vary depending on site need and intern availability
***A stipend in the amount of $300 will be allotted to those interns able to complete 300 or more hours during the course of the semester.
