The Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law is a non-profit, public interest legal foundation dedicated to furthering and protecting the civil, constitutional, and human rights of immigrants, refugees, children, prisoners, and the poor.
Since its incorporation in 1980, under the leadership of a board of directors comprising civil rights attorneys, community advocates and religious leaders, the Center has provided a wide range of legal services to vulnerable low-income victims of human and civil rights violations and technical support and training to hundreds of legal aid attorneys and paralegals in the areas of immigration law, constitutional law, and complex and class action litigation.
The Center has achieved major victories in numerous major cases in the courts of the United States and before international bodies that have directly benefited hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged persons.
Currently, our organization initiates and conducts impact class action litigation, provides technical support to other providers of legal services, and engages in advocacy work on selected issues impacting vulnerable low-income groups with legal injuries. Several of our projects are described at our web sites: www.centerforhumanrights.org and www.casa-libre.org .
CHRCL is currently seeking volunteers and interns who are committed to creating significant social change in advocating for human rights. Interested individuals will have the opportunity to assist staff on a variety of projects, including a landmark case involving asylum-seeking mother's and children being held in detention.
For example, the Flores case, which has been ongoing since 1986, was the first of its kind and set nationwide standards for the treatment of unaccompanied minors in detention as a result of the settlement agreement reached in 1996. Currently, we are involved in litigation with the Department of Homeland Security over their non-compliance with the terms set out in the 1996 agreement.
Besides this, the Center has several large-scale projects with wide reaching implications. Volunteers will have the opportunity to provide impactful contributions and work in a team setting to accomplish assignments.
