Cabrillo Whalewatch Program

We are very excited about the kick-off of one of the most engaging volunteer naturalist opportunities of the year. The beginning of the 2019/2020 season of the Cabrillo Whalewatch training program is Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Training classes for volunteer naturalists to serve onboard whale watch vessels are held every Tuesday, October through March, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Training is free and you must be over 18 years, no experience needed. The 2019/2020 season registration ends on October 15, 2019.

Become a naturalist aboard local whale watching boats. Meet with a fun group of fellow whale lovers and learn everything there is to know about Southern California whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and other marine life from experts in the field. Then inform and engage passengers as on-board naturalists on whale watching trips out of landings in the area. The Cabrillo Whalewatch program is a partnership between ACS-LA and the CMA. Show up at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, 3720 Stephen M. White Dr, San Pedro, CA 90731, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1. The program always begins the first Tuesday in October.

Mission Statement

The emphasis of the Cabrillo Whalewatch Program is to help educate and enlighten the public about the history and biology of the gray whale, as well as other local marine mammals and birds. Through education, the public becomes aware of the fragility of the marine ecosystem and the current threats to the marine mammal populations.

Description

Cabrillo Whalewatch began in 1972 as an experimental program under the direction of then Cabrillo Marine Museum Director, John M. Olguin. That year about 2,000 children and adults were the first to have the exciting and educational experience of seeing Pacific gray whales. By the next year, over 30,000 people had participated in whale-watching excursions. Since its beginnings in 1972, more than one million children and adults have gone whale-watching with the Cabrillo Whalewatch program.
