Our Mission:
Literacy Volunteers and Advocates is a 501(c)-3 non-profit dedicated to addressing the core, hidden problems of illiteracy at both an individual and community level by tailoring its programs to the thousands of adults in DC who are coping with illiteracy caused by learning challenges.
Position:
Literacy Volunteers and Advocates (LVA) is seeking professionals with a demonstrated commitment to adult literacy and education for our Board of Directors. Prior experience on a nonprofit board is not required, but preferable. Preference is given to applicants with professional backgrounds in finance, fundraising or law. The position is a two year commitment and your term will begin upon your selection to the Board.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in crafting fundraising plan and actively help with various fundraising channels (campaigns, events, networking)
- Assist ED and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting additional board members.
- Support and evaluate the Executive Director
- Exercise strategic thinking and participate in short- and long-term planning
- Enhance the organization’s public standing and garner support from the community
Expectations:
- Commitment to LVA’s mission, vision and values
- Attend 80% of the monthly board meetings and special events.
- Make a personal "Give or Get" contribution to the organization’s annual operating needs.
- Be comfortable with cultivating new donors by utilizing professional and personal contacts for soliciting funds and communicating about programs.

Mission Statement
The mission of Literacy Volunteers and Advocates (LVA) is to change the lives of adults with literacy needs in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. LVA exists to empower those who currently cannot read or write to achieve, through increased literacy, their educational, professional, and personal goals. To this end, LVA:
•Teaches basic literacy - to strengthen related life and work skills - by offering free, confidential, and volunteer-based one-on-one adult tutoring, family services, and small-group instruction;
•Educates the community, with outreach and awareness efforts, about the underlying causes and consequences of illiteracy; and
•Partners with other organizations who share LVA's vision to work in innovative ways towards the elimination of illiteracy in the Washington, D.C. area.
Our programs directly impact the lives of individuals in the National Capital Area who struggle with reading and writing.
Description
We provide free classroom instruction and one-to-one tutoring to adults who cannot read. Literacy Volunteers & Advocates also provides training to volunteers who wish to teach literacy skills. More than 40 million adults cannot read well enough to fill out a job application, follow a bus schedule, understand a medicine label, or read to their children. The District of Columbia has an illiteracy rate twice the national average. Literacy Volunteers & Advocates works to change these statistics one individual at a time.
