  • 10 people are interested

We are building Matthew Turner, a three masted brigantine in Sausalito. It is the first wooden tall ship to be built in the Bay Area in over 100 years. When completed it will be used to educate upwards of 17,000 kids per year on sailing, marine ecology and maritime history.

We are looking for carpenters, woodworkers, and just general handiwork skills. Hours are 7:30 to 4:00 weekdays and 9:00 to 4:00 Saturdays. Lunch is also provided. Please check us out at educationaltallship.org.

Mission Statement

The specific purposes for which this coorporation is organized are to construct a Tall Ship as an educational resource for youth and the greater community. The construction process will serve as a training opportunity and help presere traditional techniques as well as modern, sustainable, construction. Through the ships non-profit operation as a sailing vessel the ship will connect youth and the community to their natural environment, gain knowledge, foster respect and stewardship for the San Francisco Bay's ecosystems. The hands on process of sailing a tall ship inspires team building and leadership.

Description

Call of the Sea provides Bay Area youth an opportunity to sail traditionally rigged vessels and to learn about the marine environment as well as maritime history -- while inspiring them to be stewards of the sea and earth.

Call of the Sea is continuing the maritime history of Sausalito by building the 130 ft ship Matthew Turner . We currently offer youth marine environmental educational programs onboard Seaward, an 82 ft Schooner, on which students learn about marine ecology, maritime history and sailing. Once completed, Matthew Turner will provide additional opportunities for students of all ages to learn in a unique out-of-the-classroom environment.
