  • Real interest in refugee and immigrant issues

  • Driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation - willingness and ability to use car to transport clients preferred

  • Fluent in at least on of the following languages: Tigrinya, Arabic, Somali, Karen, Burmese or Nepali preferred

The Employment Counselor Intern will work with newly-arrive refugees and asylees participating in the Accelerated Employment Program at the International Institute of Minnesota. Interns will conduct employment-related activities with clients including helping clients fill out job applications, create client resumes, teach clients how to use the bus system, assist clients with job searches, conduct employer research, and help with various office tasks.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Work with staff and local partners to assist with employment search

  • Work one on one in the computer lab teaching computer skills and assisting with online applications

  • Train clients on American employment culture and transportation systems

  • Research potential employers

  • Office support: maintain databases, develop workshop materials, case files and organization
