Foster Grandparent volunteers are needed to tutor/mentor children with exceptional or special needs in elementary schools throughout Putnam County. Basic eligiblity requirements apply.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 55 years of age;
  • Be loving, patient, and enjoy working with children;
  • Meet federal income eligibility guidelines;
  • Be able to serve an average of 20 hours/week;
  • Obtain medical clearance;
  • Pass state and FBI National background checks and a national sexual predator check.

Applicants accepted into the program receive:

  • A tax-free stipend, currently $2.65/hour;
  • A modest travel reimbursment;
  • Pre-service training and ongoing training;
  • Supplemental accident and liabilty insurance while on duty;
  • A meal while on duty.

Make a Difference in the Life of a Child

The Foster Grandparent Program of Putnam and St. Johns Counties offers seniors age 55 and older opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors, and loving caregivers for children and youth with special needs. If you are interested in serving as a Foster Grandparent, you must meet income eligibility guidelines and pass a criminal background screening.

Income eligible volunteers will receive a modest, tax-free stipend to offset the cost of volunteering. Foster Grandparents serve an average of 20 hours a week, usually Monday through Friday, providing one-on-one, tutoring and mentoring. Other benefits include reimbursement for transportation, some meals during service, an annual physical, and accident and liability insurance while on duty. Pre-Service and monthly training sessions provided.
