I see you

While everyone knows about the overpopulation of unwanted cats and dogs, released to fend for themselves, languishing in shelters and too frequently euthanized, far fewer people think of the plight of thousands of unwanted and abandoned parrots (parakeets, cockatiels, conures, cockatoos, macaws, and amazons, etc) . Cockatiels can live up to 25 years, amazons, cockatoos and macaws up to 60 and more. That is a long time if you are miserable in a cage far too small, bored, abused, neglected and deprived of the amount of companionship and interaction you so desperately need. These sensitive and intelligent birds are trapped, bred and sold to people who often are not aware of the degree of knowledge, patience, commitment and expense required to train and care for them properly. We’ve all seen those magnificent multi-colored macaws, the entertaining antics of cockatoos and the remarkable verbal skills of african greys, but the sad truth is that these birds have received many hours of patient training , and off-camera are often difficult and demanding to live with.

Zaksee Sanctuary was founded to give space, understanding, care and companionship to parrots. They live in aviaries large enough for them to exercise those magnificent wings, in a jungle setting with the companionship of others of their kind.

Please join us at Zaksee to enjoy, learn about and help care for our "babies". There is much work to be done; aviaries enlarged, new ones built, trees and shrubs planted plus the daily chores of feeding, watering, cleaning, making perches and hanging toys to enhance the quality of life of our residents.

We welcome you to join us, learn their individual personalities, hear their stories and be a part of making a difference for those who cannot do it for themselves. We may not be able to change the world for parrots but we can change the worlds of a few.

"The sight of a parrot captive in a cage, miserably bored, breaks my heart." Jane Goodall

"As you do to the least of these, so you do unto me."

Mission Statement

Our mission is to be the best (exotic) Bird Sanctuary in Florida, and a full care facility for orphaned exotic birds. We are a loving, nurturing refuge for Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazons, African Greys, Eclectus Parrots, Sun Conures and various other exotic birds. Zaksee Florida Bird Sanctuary is an important step in helping no-longer wanted, unloved or abused parrots find their forever home. We never breed nor sell our rescued friends.

Description

Established in 2010, Zaksee Florida Bird Sanctuary was created for one reason only, "to provide a safe, and loving home for orphaned parrots that truly need care". Our sanctuary is nestled in a surprisingly unsuspected suburb of Tampa, Fl., located on 5 unspoiled acres surrounded by rolling streams of fresh water, and luscious tropical greenery. The ambiance is a breathtaking combination of natural Florida beauty and our man-made habitats. Due to the nature of our location and residents, we are continually working to upgrade our existing habitats, while constructing new aviaries for our growing population. It is a labor of love.

Our compassionate love for orphaned parrots, of all types, is what drives our sanctuary. Each and every bird in our care receives personal attention and interaction at feeding time and throughout the day. We provide a loving home and a safe haven for parrots in an environment of spacious aviaries, allowing them to fly freely, yet safely, while exercising those big beautiful wings as nature intended. We never breed, nor sell our birds, but strive to provide the love and attention they so desperately deserve. Our list of birds waiting for placement grows daily, however we try to accommodate parrots requiring our immediate attention.

We are not funded by the government, nor any corporation, but depend on the generosity of donors and volunteers like you.
