In this program, volunteers will work directly with housing coordinator to create a welcoming home environment for newly arriving refugees.

Tasks will include: purchasing household items and furniture (with agency funds), moving furniture into the refugee’s home, organizing and decorating the apartment, organizing and inventory in the RICS donation storage space, and picking up donations from donors.

Volunteers will have access to RICS vehicles, and the assistance of RICS interns and staff. Volunteer will need to be able to lift heavy items - up to 70 lbs, as well as drive a 12 passenger cargo van. This volunteer opportunity will serve to create a warm home environment for a new refugee family to live in, which is essential to their initial comfort and happiness.

Description

Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
